Professor Norman Murray Recognized as CAP Fellow Amidst String of Prestigious Honors
On May 30, 2025, Professor Norman Murray was appointed a Fellow of the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP). This significant recognition acknowledges his “outstanding research in theoretical astrophysics, with major contributions in extrasolar and solar planets, helioseismology, energetics of galaxies, and black hole AGN feedback,” as well as his “outstanding record of mentorship and training.”
The CAP Fellows Program, initiated in 2022, was created to honor CAP members who have made exceptional contributions across various domains within physics, including research, teaching, technological advancement, and service to the association. Its inaugural recipients were Canadian Nobel Laureates Arthur B. McDonald and Donna Strickland, followed by CITA Professor R. J. Bond in 2023.
The CAP Fellowship is the fourth prestigious distinction Professor Murray has received this year alone. Previously, in April, he was appointed to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and recognized as a Fellow of the American Astronomical Society (AAS).
A respected and long-standing faculty member at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) at the University of Toronto, Professor Murray boasts an impressive history of accolades. These recent honors build upon previous distinctions such as the Dannie Heineman Prize for Astrophysics (2022), being named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2021), and becoming a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2020). Beyond his numerous individual achievements and foundational contributions to astrophysics, Professor Murray is highly regarded for his dedication to nurturing new talent, having mentored more than 50 postdoctoral fellows and a substantial number of graduate students, many of whom have gone on to become leaders in the astrophysics field.
