The (Not Quite) First Galaxies in the Universe

Abstract: The birth of the first stars and galaxies has been one of the “final frontiers” of cosmology for many years, as it holds the keys to understanding the birth of complexity in our universe. Probing this “cosmic dawn” must await future instruments, but even today we are making substantial progress in understanding the not-too-distant descendants of these first galaxies. I will describe recent progress in observations and models of galaxies at redshifts above 6 and then describe some of their implications for future observations.
