Gone with the Wind

Abstract: A key question in galaxy evolution is how the formation of stars is regulated by feedback from massive stars and accreting supermassive black holes. Feeback of some form is now routinely incorporated into numerical simulations, but our understanding of the physical processes at work and their impact is still very limited. I will argue that the best empirical constraints on feedback come from the study of galactic-scale gaseous outflows, termed galactic winds. I will discuss recent observations of galactic winds focusing on some extreme examples where outflows appear to be rapidly quenching galaxy-wide star formation.
