Observations of Speckles in Interstellar Scattering via Earth-Space Interferometry

Carl Gwinn (UC Santa Barbara) // Mar 24, 2015

Abstract: Radio images of compact sources, scattered by fluctuations in interstellar plasma density, show rich internal structure. Recent observations of pulsars with the Radioastron telescope, now operating in an elliptical orbit extending to the distance of the Moon, show a variety of structures on many scales. Centimeter-wavelength observations of SgrA*, the compact source coincident with the Galactic-center black hole, also show a scattering disk with complicated internal structure. Theoretical work indicates that the properties of both scattering material and the underlying source affect this structure. I will review current observations and describe theoretical pictures.
