Advancement

The DDO bequest arose out of the public outreach efforts of Professor Augustus Chant, who introduced A&A into Math and Physics in 1902 (becoming the Department of Astrophysics in 1905). Gifts of a wide range of sizes have come to DA as a result of our public profile, and DA is strongly committed to continuing those outreach efforts. Our efforts in fundraising revolve largely around public lectures. We need to have up-to-date presentations and display facilities. DA has allocated a support position partially to this activity and is currently investing about $25,000 of endowed funds in specialized equipment designed to make the public tours on the St. George campus and at DDO even more informative and enjoyable. Over the next planning period we will invest at least $25,000 in new equipment and double that sum if possible, and make some use of the services of an Educational Technologist. A major reinvestment in the St. George Undergraduate Observatory is needed.
