Improved methods for turbulence in astrophysics

ABSTRACT:Methods for studying turbulence, hitherto not used in astrophysics, are presented,
supplementing the exposition published by Dickman and Kleiner (1985).
New
statistical results are incorporated, and new sources of error and bias of the
estimates of autocorrelation (ACF) and structure (STR) functions are
discussed.
Different possibilities for the extraction of stationary components for
existing data are examined, and a new aproach to data filtering is given, with the
aim of reaching optimal compromises between directional effects and
filter sizes.
In addition, deviations from the idealized conditions of the
Kolmogorov theory of turbulence are summarized.
