I propose to give a PhD mini-course on this topic in the Spring semester. The course will likely consist of 2 hr sessions organised broadly as follows:

  1. Introduction: the local Universe, methods, methodological questions, and a bit of recent history.
  2. Galaxy evolution: normal galaxies at z < 1 as seen in deep redshift surveys and in clusters.
  3. Galaxy formation: towards a history of star-formation in the Universe: different observational perspectives on galaxies at z > 1.
  4. Future prospects: the dark ages and the opening of new windows.

I would like to do all these lectures in February and I would like to have an organizationl meeting in early January to coordinate a schedule. Please indicate on the sheet on the 14th floor whether you would like to take this course, plus any time constraints. I will contact only those on the list.

Simon Lilly.
