The Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Toronto St George Campus invites applications for a Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in theoretical astrophysics. This will be a full-time, tenure-stream faculty position in Gravity of Fundamental Astrophysics Research (GoFAR). We encourage strong junior scholars to apply. The appointment will be at the rank of Professor and will commence July 1, 2019.

The CERC chair-holder will be an internationally recognized leader in the fundamentals of gravity, its effect on the universe, and its relation to extreme astrophysical environments. Directing the GoFAR program, the CERC chair-holder will drive major advances at the forefront of fundamental gravity research, lead the development of research efforts across the rapidly evolving field of gravitational-wave astrophysics, consolidate expertise across all GoFAR topics, and spearhead concrete and coordinated solutions to the corresponding data-science challenges. Building on the University of Toronto’s strong track record in areas closely related to the GoFAR program, together with our continuing engagement with and leadership of large observational projects, the CERC chair-holder will provide global leadership across the entire GoFAR program, supported with over $10,000,000 in new research funding over the first seven years.

The candidate will have established an innovative research trajectory at the highest international level and an outstanding, externally funded research program. The candidate’s record of excellence in research should be demonstrated by a record of impactful, sustained contributions and publications in top ranked relevant academic journals, obtaining competitive funding sources, and strong endorsements by referees of high standing, or acts of service/outreach that have had an impact on the field or talent in the field, such as mentoring or community-based actions. The candidate will have demonstrated excellence in developing a teaching programs at the undergraduate and graduate level and significant previous experience as an effective mentor/supervisor to successful trainees including graduate students. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments (including supervisions of Masters and PhD students), strong letters of reference and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. Commitment to and leadership in equity, diversity and inclusion is required, as demonstrated through, for example, a commitment to mentoring, to supporting faculty from underrepresented groups, outreach to diversify the talent and/or increase the number of women and other underrepresented groups in STEM disciplines.
