As mentioned in § 2.1, most faculty are involved in a plethora of national and international committees, boards, and planning groups. Based on an independent citation analysis, the average impact of the astronomers at the University of Toronto is the highest in Canada and outranks the average of all in the United States and the United Kingdom (NRC Review of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, 26 October 1998). Grants received from NSERC are similarly enhanced.
