CITA Professor named Finalist for Canada's Top Science and Engineering Prize
Dick Bond selected as `one of the world's leading cosmologists'
Toronto, ON, Feb 7 -- Richard `Dick' Bond, University Professor at the University of Toronto, Director of the CIAR Cosmology & Gravity Program, and past Director (1996-2006) of CITA, has been selected by NSERC as one of the three finalists this year for Canada's top Science and Engineering Prize, the 2007 Gerhard Herzberg Gold Medal. Named for Canadian Nobel laureate Gerhard Herzberg, the annual prize is widely recognized as the country's most prestigious science award.
Bond has been selected in recognition of his outstanding research contributions that made him ``one of the world's leading cosmologists. He is responsible for major new insights into the origin and evolution of the interconnected cosmic web of galaxies we observe and the definitive role played by dark matter, dark energy and black holes. He has developed the theory and analysis of cosmic microwave background radiation fluctuations into a high precision tool for exploring the cosmos."
The award, presented annually by NSERC, includes an increase in the winner's research grant to $1 million over five years.
Lev Koffman, Associate Director of CITA, was pleased that Bond was recognized for his work. ``I am pleased'', said Koffman, that this marked ``yet another achievement in his rising career.''
About the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics. The Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) is a world-class, nationally supported, research center for studies in theoretical astrophysics and related subjects hosted by the University of Toronto. The primary missions of CITA are to foster interaction within the Canadian theoretical astrophysics community and to serve as an international center of excellence for theoretical studies in astrophysics. CITA receives research support from a collaborative special project grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), as well as the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR).
