Magnetic fields and rotation in core-collapse supernova

Abstract:

Magnetic fields may effect the supernova explosion of a massive star
dynamically, e.g., accelerating jet-like outflows, if they are
amplified sufficiently from their weak progenitor strength. In the
presence of rotation, the magneto-rotational instability might account
for the required amplification. In a parameter study of simplified
models of supernova cores, we have explored this possibility. I will
summarise the main results of this study, suggesting magnetic fields
to play a role for a subclass of explosions, and give an outlook on
open issues in this field.
